This project aims to understand key fundamental questions on how neurons select which microRNAs to send, how these molecular messages are packaged and released, and how receiving cells interpret them. The research will also investigate how this process contributes to the ability of neuronal networks to adapt and reorganize in response to changes in activity, a property known as synaptic plasticity.
This project could reveal new ways by which neuronal cells interact in both healthy and diseased states, and therefore help identify new therapeutic targets. Because the research also includes studies using human neurons in collaboration with Prof. Deborah Kronenberg-Versteeg (DZNE Tübingen), the results have strong potential to support the development of clinically relevant applications in the future.
